Summer Hike (aka cross-training)

Adam and I are trying hard to get our “cross training” in during our marathon training so during our first week of travels, we decided to go for a long hike in the woods near my parent’s place in Wisconsin.

It was hot. Like reaching 102 degrees hot.  Even under the shade of the trees, we were sweating.  But the trail was gorgeous.

So many wildflowers, chirping birds and buzzing insects.  I miss that living in a metropolitan area of Florida.

We stumbled across a few man-made pseudo-shelters that were pretty cool.  Both were pretty far off the trail, obviously had been there for a while.  I have no idea if anyone ever slept under them or if they were just built by kids playing, but they were a good couple miles up the bluff.

The hike was mostly uphill (until, of course, the return) and we were both sweating. My legs were sore the next day so I was happy to have worked out some muscles that aren’t used to working. I definitely miss the days of hiking these trails from backyards and down the street.  Now, we have to travel across the country to find hills and trails like this.

Not that I mind my morning run route, but it’s really all we’ve got …
