If you were to ask my what my favorite type of music is, my answer would probably be “Indie.” But indie encompasses a lot of sub-genres, and indie pop or indie dance is my favorite pump-me-up running music.
From the Pavement Runner, here are the rules:
- Something Old: These will be songs that are at least 5 years old. I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.
- Something Current: These will be songs that have been released within the past year. I know, but you have to give me some leeway here.
- Something to Consider: These will be songs that are not typically heard on the radio and may be by artists you’ve never heard of or considered running to. This is the wild card category, can be old or current.
Something Old
Artist: Hot Hot Heat
Song: Island of the Honest Man
Side Note: While they’ve never been a big-name success, this band has toured with Weezer, Foo Fighters, the Killers and Snow Patrol.
Quotable: Welcome to the island of the honest man, do what you want – there is no need to impress us. Welcome to the island of the honest man. We don’t believe in what the big people tell us. Wait here – stay here.
Something Current
Artist: Grouplove
Song: Tongue Tied
Side Note: You might recognize this song from a recent iPod commercial. The members of this group met at a commune in 2008. Apparently, they still exist!
Quotable: Let’s stay up all night; I’ll get real high. Slumber party; pillow fight; My eyes and your eyes, like Peter Pan up in the sky. (I’m pretty sure this song is about smoking pot, yah?)
Something to Consider
Artist: Empire of the Sun
Song: We Are the People
Side Note: This is an Australian group that hasn’t hit it too big in the U.S. yet. The video is crazy cool. It was shot in Mexico using traditional Dia de los Muertos imagery, and it’s really trippy.
Quotable: We are the people that rule the world. A force running in every boy and girl. All rejoicing in the world.

I like the song “Island of the Honest Man” much from these three. This is a rocking song of the rocking artist.

I have never had the curiosity to listen to Indie pop but after watching the videos above it seems I will be listening to them quite a lot. Island of the Honest Man is just too awesome.
