Playlist Thursday: Old School Punk Rock

Last week was a whole lot of hectic what with the wedding and stuff, so I skipped out on writing completely.  I’m sure you missed me terribly, right?  Good thing Pavement Runner kept you going with his playlists!

But I’m back, and ready to share my running playlist favorites … even though I’m on a total lazy spell and loving it since I have to start kicking up the runs I dunno, tomorrow, to get ready for marathon training.

Officially, training starts July 2nd, but that first week’s long run is 8 miles and I’m probably only good for 4 or so after this past lazy month.  I’ll get it back.  Tomorrow.

As always, here is the format:

  • Something Old: These will be songs that are at least 5 years old. I know that isn’t too long to be considered old, but music turnover happens quickly.
  • Something Current: These will be songs that have been released within the past year. I know, but you have to give me some leeway here.
  • Something to Consider: These will be songs that are not typically heard on the radio and may be by artists you’ve never heard of or considered running to. This is the wild card category, can be old or current.

Let’s be clear though:  all of these songs will be old, since it’s “old school punk” themed.   And by “old school,” I’m talking the late 80′s and early 90′s. But that’s my old school. Don’t judge.

Something Old

Artist: Dead Milkmen
Title: Punk Rock Girl
Side Note: This is one song I will always belt out loud wherever I’m at. A guaranteed way to make me look like a fool.
Quotable: “Punk rock girl, give me a chance.  Let’s go slam dance. We’ll travel ’round the world, just you and me, punk rock girl.”

Something New(er) (sorta)

Artist: NOFX
Title: Linoleum
Side Note: This whole album, Punk in Drublic, is one of my favorite punk rock anthem albums of all time. I’d play it on repeat.
Quotable: “That’s me on the beachside, combing the sand. Metal meter in my hand, sporting a pocket full of change.”

Something to Consider

Artist: Jawbreaker
Title: Boxcar
Side Note:  There are a whole lotta great deep cuts on this album – and I really think it’s one of my favorite bands of the 90′s, but Boxcar is their anthem song.
Quotable: “Not a punk, and I’m telling everyone. Save your breathe, I never was one.”

If you haven’t already, head over to Pavement Runner’s blog to see his list for today.  Do you have your own Playlist Thursday post?  Let us know and we’ll link it up!

Next week, stay tuned for a Beastie Boy’s tribute week.  RIP MCA.

  1. Awesome playlist. I was thinking of starting a website called “Punk Rock Runners” where people of like taste could share and submit playlist’s like this one. I too am training for a half-marathon and always have my ipod full of face to face, propagandhi, nation of ulysses, dag nasty and such. Jawbreaker is a GREAT band by the way….keep up the training!
