Prepping the Gardens

We prepped our gardens today for the fall and winter plantings!

First, we pulled all the weeds that had been growing all summer (sucking the little nutrients left right out of the soil).  Then, we turned the soil with a shovel to dig up all of the roots and mix the earthy, dark soil below with the parched, dry soil on top.

The fun part of our day was digging out the compost we’d been working on all year. There definitely wan’t enough compost to cover both gardens, so we had to run out and buy a few bags of Black Kow manure compost too.  Just in case.

Check out this awesome compost, full of egg shells and veggie goodness.

We dug it all in, turned it and raked it level; put the cages back up so our chickens won’t dig it all up and we’ll start planting next week!
