I’m so pumped. Adam and I have been skirting around the idea of getting a small backyard chicken coop and I think we’re going to take the plunge this weekend. We found a local farm equipment company that builds simple, affordable coops that will hold 3-4 adult hens, and talked to a farmer at the market last weekend.
We have a perfect side yard for the coop placement, and can eventually build out a bigger corral to let them roam around the backyard a little more (ha!). How fun to have chickens running around with the kids!
I’ve been researching breeds, behaviors, care and finding the ideal set up for our flock. We’re leaning toward a simple A-frame tractor-style coop like this one, that we found for $200 from a local builder.
We’re thinking 3-4 chickens at the most; laying hens just for the fresh eggs.
Do you have any experience with backyard chickens, especially in Florida? They seem effortless and fun, so we’re pretty excited.

LOL we considered that too, but my husband + power tools? Best left to the pro’s. We found a guy who’s often at the Saturday Morning Market that has nice coops for $200 – so that’s what we’re getting (tomorrow, hopefully). Been so busy we haven’t had a moment!
My fear exactly, the hubby/power tool thing, lol. $200 is great for a coop. We’re not up that way much anymore, may have to make a special trip. Did you get yours yesterday?

It’s being delivered tomorrow (Tuesday) with six (6! ah!) chicks. Soooo excited – the kids are too!
