No, I’m not pregnant.
Let’s just get that out of the way.
I’m actually in Wisconsin right now.
I couldn’t say anything about it. On Facebook or Twitter or here. I know my mom follows all of my accounts. That means most of my clients don’t even know I’ve been out for three days (gasp!) without even a laptop (double gasp!).
Yesterday, my parents celebrated their 40th anniversary, and Piper and I flew up here to surprise them.
It was really hard not to say anything over the past few months that we’d been planning. Trying to tease the details of the weekend out of them without sounding too inquisitive. Organizing rides from the airport and a potential party (not happening) with their friends.
Compound all of that by full day flight delays. Our 8:15 am flight on Thursday morning was pushed back to 10:30, which meant we missed our connection and then every single flight after that was delayed or cancelled. We didn’t get out of O’Hare airport until 9:30 pm. Our 1:00 pm arrival turned into 10:45, so instead of a big surprise, we woke up Gramma slowly to say hello, with Piper sleeping on my shoulder.
At first, we tried to get a full surprise visit with our family and my brother and his wife, but they decided they needed to spill the beans since traveling with a family of four requires at least some advance planning.
Piper starts preschool on Tuesday. She’s supposed to start today, but we scheduled an orientation for her a couple weeks ago so we could get it out of the way. We don’t arrive tonight until 9:00 pm.
So we pulled off the surprise. And what’s more is that the weather is absolutely amazing. Low 70′s during the day; 50′s at night. So incredibly refreshing after the 100′s we experienced in July, and the mid-90′s we’re hating in Florida right now.
I’m so happy we were able to pull this off – and we’ve had a really fun weekend celebrating with my entire family. We seriously started planning this in April or May. It was all easy until the last few weeks, when all I wanted to do was tell Piper we were going on an airplane to “berprize” Gramma and Grampa. (I had to wait until the very last minute so she wouldn’t spill the beans during a phone call or worse, Skype.)
Of course, my mom was tipped off at the very last minute by – of all things – my absence from Facebook on Thursday. She told my dad she had a hunch we were en route. It’s hard to get anything past her.
We had a great day on Saturday. A 9-mile run followed by a beautiful day on the river with their friends. Home for showers and then we left the kids with a sitter and went out for an amazing dinner.
We’ve never been able to be here at the same time as my brother’s family – I only wish Adam and Riley could’ve been with us, but school starts this week so that wasn’t be. We won’t have another big anniversary for 10 years, but hopefully we can coordinate a few more summer trips together.
